About “Barking at the Sun”

Barking at the Sun is a website about China. The site is divided into five sections.

The Blog is a group blog focusing on Southwestern China and, specifically, Chengdu.

The Articles include writing that is longer and denser than blog posts.

The Language section has material intended to help people study Sichuanhua (the dialect of Sichuan province) and Mandarin.

Finally, the Dubious News! section and the Bad Humor! section are both based loosely in reality. Please do not take them too seriously.

Barking at the Sun is always looking for more quality content–if you would like to contribute, please go here.

About the Name

蜀犬吠日 (shǔquǎnfèirì) is a Chinese chengyu (four character idiom) which translates as “a Sichuan dog barks at the sun.”

It is used describe someone who is surprised by something normal due to their own ignorance, and comes from a story about how a dog in Sichuan barked at the sun because he had never seen it before (Sichuan is almost always covered in clouds).

So one could say: “foreigners writing down their observations of Sichuan” = “蜀犬吠日.”
